Private fostering is when a foster carer, who is neither a parent nor a close relative (such as a great aunt, cousin, mom's friend, or a neighbour), looks after an under-16 (or under-18 if the child or young person is disabled) child or young person for at least 28 days in their home. Children who spend more than two weeks of the school break in residential schools are included.
