Prepreg composites
valid until: 04 Jun 2026date published: 04 Jun 2025Prepreg composites, short for pre-impregnated composites, are advanced materials used in high-performance applications across industries such as aerospace, automotive, and sports equipment. These composites consist of reinforcing fibers—typically carbon, glass, or aramid—that are pre-impregnated with a partially cured thermoset resin matrix, usually epoxy. The resin provides the necessary bonding and mechanical strength, while the fibers contribute to the composite's stiffness and durability.
The prepreg form ensures uniform resin distribution, optimal fiber alignment, and superior material consistency compared to traditional wet layup processes. Prepregs are stored in refrigerated conditions to prevent premature curing and are typically molded and cured under heat and pressure using autoclaves or ovens.
