The term is a bit of a misnomer. Just based on the term general some patients think a general surgeon isn't a specialist. This isn't really the case. Please see the procedures that Dr. Harris performs on the Procedures Page - this is a pretty typical list for a general surgeon though in more rural areas a general surgeon may do some vascular surgery. In more metropolitan areas such as Birmingham, some surgeons may focus on only a few procedures and avoid others. Some patients prefer a surgeon who has a very narrow scope of practice while other patients just want a really good surgeon.
